Antonioni's Documentaries - Program II

Antonioni: The Vision That Changed Cinema (Antonioni, Lo Sguardo Che Cambio' Il Cinema)

Director: Carlo di Carlo
60' - BETACAM - Colour - 2001 - S/T

Directed by Carlo di Carlo, Antonioni's friend, biographer and curator of the Antonioni archive in Ferrara, this mix of film clips and interviews traces the work of a great visionary who transformed the expressive possibilities of cinema, but also reveals the more charming, affable side of an artist known for probing the metaphysical depths of spiritual malaise, meaninglessness and our inability to communicate. "It is true that I always carry with me incommunicability," Antonioni says. "But if I really were incommunicable I would have not been able to communicate incommunicability."

The Last Scene Of 'The Passanger' (L'ultima Sequenza Di Professione: Reporter)

Director: André S. Labarthe
12' - BETACAM - Colour - 1974 - S/T

Cahiers du cinéma critic André S. Labarthe analyses one of the most extraordinary sequences in cinema: the stunning seven-minute single shot that concludes Antonioni's The Passenger.

"Would it be too much to simply say, 'Go see them all'? This is the kind of retro that can make filmmakers out of footage collectors, the enlightened out of the curious. If you always wanted to sample Antonioni, now's the time; please don't try this at home." -Time Out New York

"Antonioni has given us a body of astonishing cinematic poetry, of visual compositions in which every element is charged with emotional and symbolic resonance." -Stephen Holden, The New York Times
